Financial Message to 1997 Group

The Club is facing a period in which cash flow is extremely tight.

We already have substantial borrowings and in the current climate

additional borrowing is just not an option. The economic downturn

has meant the cancellation of the Race Day at Punchestown,

which was a major fund-raiser in recent years.

All of the Club’s other revenue streams have also tightened up, most notably Bar/Functions revenue.

A number of immediate measures have been adopted by the Executive to address the critical lack of

cash flow.

1. Going forward all teams must be financially self sufficient i.e. raise enough revenue to cover its costs.

Between equipment, pitch hire, entry fees, insurance and referees fees the costs of running teams is higher

than you think. Teams are being asked to run their own fundraisers, using the Club’s facilities preferably.

2. Membership subscriptions alone are not enough to cover the running of the Club's activities. Like many clubs we run a weekly LOTTO (with a jackpot of between €1,000 and €11,000).

The Club is encouraging as many members as possible to participate in our Lotto.  As well as being a recurring source of revenue it can be won -

we have paid out almost €7,000 in the last 4 months to three different winners

We the 1997 Hurling and football mentors have decided to introduce two measures to raise enough

revenue to cover our planned costs for 2010:

(a)    Collection of a once-off €20 from each family to cover the costs of referees fees in particular.

Referees fees are €40 per match with €20 contributed by each team. Up to this point the fee has been typically paid by a mentor of the team

and then claimed back from the club at a later point.

(b)   Holding of a fund raising event in the Autumn to cover the balance of our costs. We plan to have a bag packing exercise with a local

supermarket, which will involve all our boys.

Once again we would like to thank you for all your support to our Club and our teams.

We would like to think that you enjoy some of the following benefits by being involved with Na Fianna:

  • Regular participation for your son in both gaelic football and hurling
  • Development of your son’s sporting skills in both codes through weekly training sessions
  • The opportunity to develop lasting friendships for your sons and you by being involved in the Club

1997 Mentors

For the first time our lads will split into three ability-based panels of A,B and C. Each player is watched carefully and it is expected

that there will be plenty of movement between panels. As in previous years the priority is that each lad;

  • enjoy their experience in Na Fianna and stay involved over the longer term;
  • Develop their skills as footballers and their maturity as team players;
  • Play and compete at a level appropriate to their own ability.

As mentors we are conscious of lads not getting injured or feeling they are out of their depth, with this in mind we stream

players according to their football ability and where we believe they are best suited to play at a particular given time. We are

constantly reviewing our decisions in this regard. If you have any concerns about you son's playing experience please feel

free to raise it with us - its an imperfect science with marginal difference between players on the cusp of A/B or B/C.

In terms of B football we will play in the 4th Division; we are only allowed to make 5 substitutions so we will be aiming to give

each player plenty of playing time whilst also remaining competitive in matches. With this in mind players who attend most

regularly at training and matches with get most playing time.
