 Junior A Championship Final

County Final set for Sunday October 16th at 2pm Parnell Park, curtain-raiser to Senior County Final

Breaking News.... 7th December 2005......Congratulations to Ronan Mac GiollaRuaidh, Captaen na bhfoireann, on his engagement to Fiona Cullivan. Having collected a notable piece of silverware from the County Board on the 16th of October, Roney bunked off college for a week in Prague, popped the question on bended knee at the Charles bridge and produced a sparkler, allegedly smelted from the handle of the Junior Championship trophy(last seen in a cameo appearance in the Markets area of Dublin 7), to Fiona who said she would be honoured to change her name to Bean nic GiollaRuaidh..

Well done Roney from all the panel, less scorpiness from you in training from now on, perhaps?????

AFL Div 3. 4.5.05 Skerries Harps 1-6, Na Fianna 11.

Probably Na Fianna's best display of the season. Inspired by the salty air blowing from the Irish Sea Na Fianna came out of a ding dong battle with a one point victory. Na Fianna were a point up with 5 mins to go but Skerries drew level. Paul Mc Gauran knocked over what seemed like a winner from play but Skerries came straight up the pitch to level when Beano was harshly adjudged to have picked up off the ground. Surprisingly there was more drama to follow as the ball was moved towards the skerries goal. Roney Mac G was bundled over, no free, A Skerries defender was blown for what seemed like a legal pick up but we scored the free awarded and said thanks to the Ref before heading back to be inpsired by the rusty hew of the Royal Canal.

AFL Div 3. 23.4.05 Na Fianna 0-12, Ballyboden 0-5.

Sandwiched between Stephen Mc Glinchey's and Ciaran Gilligan's wedding this was quite simply the Barry Newman show on the DCU back pitch. A strong display allround including a fabulous block by Alan Behan meant we could head to the Wedding bearing gifts and two valuable league points.

AFL Div 3. 13.3.05 Lucan Sarsfields 2-7, Na Fianna 1-6.

Na Fianna Inters made an inauspicious start to their campaign in a cold and dreary 12th lock in the Middle of March. After the eskimo was removed from his fishing perch on the 45 Na Fianna got stuck into Lucan and, playing some splendidly attractive football led by 1-2 to 0-1 after 15 minutes. This, however, was as good as it got.

The fact that many of the team were new to each others style of play caused some problems but on the day Na Fianna were far short of what is required at this level and the concession of comparatively soft goals at the end of each half sealed their fate. A bad day for the lads on their induction to Division three. The eskimo fared better, catching two perch and a baby pike before we found our way out of the Town Planners Nightmare and headed back to Civilisation.

AFL Div 3 10.04.05 Na Fianna 1-5, St. Brigids 0-7.

Despite a scoring total that didn't better their opening day tally, The Inters collected two points in this home encounter against one of the sides fancied to be there or there abouts come the end of the Season. Na Fianna had a more balanced look about their line up and this was aided by the return of Alan Behan following a couple of seasons fighting in the Eastern Crusades. Beano's return to full back allowed the Big Rig to pull out and park his four axels across the half back line adding bulk and maturity to that particular area.

A rejuvenated Baz Newman opened the scoring with a wonder point from the Gravel pit corner. Using Cider's dummy solo to great effect he calmly slotted over to settle the early match nerves. Scoring chances were few and far between however the Na Fianna defence was resolute with all parts of the body being used to quell the many Brigid's attacks. Brigids corner forwards were causing problems and they took some nice scores. The crucial score of the game came after 25 mins. A long ball from O'Hagan to Roney allowed him to bear in on goal, slipping the ball to Baz Newman who shot to the net from six yards.

Two changes were made at half time and Na Fianna were just as strong in the second half. Joey 'The Duck' Mc Guirk came into his own and controlled midfield for long periods. Brigids were always dangerous and a shot from their no.12 clipped the outside of Scanno's goal. With 2 minutes left the sides were level. A draw was likely until Newman chased a hopeless cause, stole the ball from the Brigids no 7, played in Tomi K who ran for the end line and cooly slotted over the winner to the delight of the denizens of the Mobhi Mound who had come to applaud their heroes.

Both sides showed unusual profligacy and the only surprise is that the scores were so low in a free flowing game with very little rancour or off the ball shenanigans.

The next league match is home to Ballyboden at the changed time of 12.30 next Saturday 23.04.05. This is to facilitate Ciaran Gilligan's nuptials in Mount Argus at 2p.m. We may be alittle late Gillo but hopefully we'll arrive in time for the Champers with a couple more points in the bag.

Intermediate footballlers continue preparations with Challenge game against Fingal Ravers next Saturday morning at 10.30(ish) in DCU. Players note that subs are long overdue. Aprox 15 members of the panel have done the honourable thing and paid on time. The remainder (you know who you are) face the derision of and ulimate banishment from their sporting family. Don't say you haven't been warned.

INTERMEDIATE TEAM ARE BACK IN FULL TRAINING FOR THE 2005 SEASON. ALL PLAYERS PLEASE NOTE THAT SUBS HAVE TO BE PAID BY NEXT WEEKEND....... PLEASE ARRANGE T FILL OUT THE RENEWAL FORM AND MAKE PAYMENT TO RONEY OR LEO. YOU HAVE THREE CHANCES TO PAY THIS WEEKN SO DON'T BE A LAXI!!!!!!!

Na Fianna 2-8, Good Counsel 1-2, Balgriffin 12th Dec 2004.

With only 13 shoping days to Christmas Na Fianna Inters confronted the Good Counsel first team for an all or nothing game at Balgriffin. Na Fianna lined out with a strong team bolstered by the return of Sean Forde to competitive fare. The match began at break-neck speed with Na Fianna gaing a two point advantage from free kicks. Counsel responded with a point from play and things were pretty even for the first nervous ten minutes. In a flash the ball was moved along the right wing, Roney Mac Giolla Rua placed Danjo in front of goal and the Man Mountain  buried low and hard to the clubhouse goal.

A sublime effort from the boot of Fordie in front of the Large Na Fianna contingent further strengthened our hand. However Counsel rallied to score a fine goal when seizing upon some hesitancy in the Na Fianna Defence. Half time and scores were NF 1-4, GC 1-2.

Little did Na Fianna know that the goal would be GC'S last score. In a comprehensive display of defensive action Na Fianna locked GC out for the entire second half lead by Gary MC Gauran. The forwards added to their firsthalf tally but could have been more clinical in their finishing. Steo Behan, Big Barry Mc Carthy, Kearnser and Tomi K were introduced to spruce up the attack and they all assisted in a positive way especially Big Barry who scored a rasper to best the impressive GC Keeper.

So ultimately it was a successful year with promotion guaranteed and a new challenge next season.. Thanks to Lar and Hench for looking after the lads( and the sometime bitchy girls) for the year. Everyone certainly appreciates the massive sacrifice made. Now lookafter yourselves over the Chrimbo, get plenty of the right fuel on board, stay away from the sauce and come back lean and healthy for the challenge ahead. In the meantime we would ask you to submit your votes to Gerry Gray (Skipper) by text regarding the following awards.

Player of the year, best score, best shot at paintballing, best redhead and person with a foot that most resembles a banana.

Na Fianna 2-5, Clann na Gael Fontenoy 0-8, Balgriffin 28-11-04

Na Fianna Inters progressed to the promotion play off finals with a spirited victory over their Ringsend rivals. In what was every bit a rematch of Na Fiannas closest league victory of the regular season, Na Fianna withstood a second half barrage to emerge victorious and take their place in the finals against Good Counsel in two weeks(provisionally).

Playing on the smaller pitch in Balgriffin(Bulman'sField) Na Fianna played an open attacking game, avoiding the mist and controversy that descended on the same field in previous visits. Na Fiannas midfield of Danjo Mc Gowan and Jonner Kearns were vertically cahallenged against their Clan counterparts however the roving ranger that was Ronser O'Hagan cancelled this particular advantage. Na Fianna scoed an early goal, A spculative Paul Mc Gauran punt rebounded off the crossbar into the grateful hands of Mark Foley who dispatched to the net. Some neat scores followed from Brian Courtney and O'Hagan who punished any mistakes in the Clann defence. Roney Mc Giolla Rua was a telling link man in most of the Na Fianna attacks. The most crucial score of the game resulted from a sideline ball following some Clann profligacy. Nelly to Roney into Pauley and Goal. Halftime and Clann hadn't time to answer.

The second half was a real battle and the defence did n't look as assured as they had in the first hal;f. Despite a nervy middle ten minutes they held their own opting to foul rather than let their opponents have a clear shot, Gary Mc Gauran also used psychological tactics to snuff out the challenge of the Clann forwards. They rallied well and the forwards chipped in with three points the last one being a thing of beauty from the rejuvenated Barry Newman. So it was a tale of broken teeth and sore limbs but the dream of promotion moved one step closer to reality in Bulman's field in the Parish of dodgy tashes.

Na Fianna 0-8, Round Towers Lusk 0-8, Mobhi Road, Saturday 13-11-04.

Na Fianna Inters fell over the line to reach the play-offs for promotion to Division 3. A combative performance laced with no little character saw Na Fianna get something from the type of match they have blown in previous weeks.

The match was always going to be tight affair as there was a huge incentive to win for both teams. The conditions were perfect and the low Winter sun did cause some problems for the Na Fianna defence, and the RTL forwards in the first half. Points were swapped routinely in a cat and mouse first half, Paul Mc Gauran doing the honours as uaual for Na Fianna. Ronan Mc Giolla Ruaidh scored a nice point from play following exemplary defending by Gary Mc Gauran and Ciaran Gillihgan. 0-4 TO -3 in favour of Na Fianna at half time and it was all to play for.

Na Fianna began the second half more confidently and Ronan O'Hagan scored a beauty from the sideline, which was quickly followed by a sweet point from Nellie O'Ceallachain following a surging run from the half back line. Round Towers clung on and clawed their way back to parity. The changes were rung by management for the final quarter. Tomi k came ashore having given his all following a dose of a disease that starts with M and ends in S common among students of various 3rd level institutions. He was replaced by Jonner Kearns. Baz 'give us a pound of grapes and none of yer lip' Newman and Caoimhin Ocoigligh were introduced to inject a bit of Fizz to the attack. The switches worked and despite some moments of panic and the width of an upright, Na Fianna held out to reclaim some self esteem and maintain their challenge to plya in the league upstairs. So Lucan take the cigar and we face Clann Mhuire or Fontenoys, most likely next weekend....To Be Continued.

The inter footballers have hit something of a wobbly patch over the last month. Postponements and holidays have caused disruption over the last two months. During that time we saw off the challenge of Sylvesters on lovely sunny evening at Mobhi Rd on the eve of the all Ireland hurling final 1-10 to 0-6 was the score. Two weeks later we suffered a cataclysmic loss to Clann Mhuire in a match that ended 1-8 to 0-10 in favour of Clann Mhuire. Too many chicken kicks and a lack of focus on the job in hand sealed our fate and surrendered our title ambitions to our Southside rivals. Last weekend a three point reversal, 1-11 to 1-8, at the hands of a strong, but by no means invincible, Good Counsel side put us back into the dogfight that is the 'promotion play off series' Ultimately we have to win our final match against Round Towers of Lusk to ensure further involvement in the playoffs. The alternative is a bleak scenario. Watch this space for details of the fixture and in the meantime best of luck to the Hurlers in Saturdays Championship final against Trinity Gaels. Finally A speedy recovery to Cider O'Carroll following his dalliance with a theatre slab and Surgeon's scalpel last Thursday. Judging by the way the 'Enlightened ones'(County Board to the uninitiated) STRETCH OUT the season you'll probably be back for the end game.

Na Fianna 0-17, Crumlin 3-05, Pearse Park, Sun 15th August.

The second half was a different krttle of fish and we leaked three sloppy goals to keep Crumlin's hopes alive for longer than necessary. A free in the last minute saw their Big No. 8 squueze a 14 yards between 9 Na Fianna bodies massed on the line. Despite Noel Eraley's and Leo Fay's despairing lunge the ball wriggled into the net. That was the final action of the match. A new look tem with Ronie and Mark Foley switched to the half back line and John O'Neill ending up as a makeshift fullback, to tremendous effect.

Nevertheless two points are two points no matter how you look at it and Na Fianna regroup for a match against Sylvesters next Saturday Tuesdays crunch match in the Naul has been called off due to Players on Holidays and injuries and an evening of wine tasting in a house in Cabra.

Na Fianna 0-12, Thomas Davis 0-9, Sat 24th July, Mobhi 4 P.M.

Na Fianna continued on their winning ways with a good enough display against Davises on Saturday last. Conditions were near perfect for football and the game was open and flowed throughout. Star performer was Wee Brian Courtney who gave a man -o- match performance notching 5 points by the fnal whistle. Again ROH was impressive as a third midfielder but he was not half as impressive as Danjo Mc Gowan who appeared in all his glory in Tuesday's herald. Too many Tony Quinn milkshakes Danjo!!! but most of us thought it was hillarious despite what some of the dry arses on the Dubs Forum may say.

The match was won early in the second half when Na Fianna popped five unanswered scores and generally dominated proceedings with a combination of gritty tackling by the forwards and accurate scoretaking. This was in stark contrast to the awful first half however what the forwards lacked in accuracy they made up in aggression and time and time again forced the Davis players to play numerous balls back to their keeper.

Davises kept in touch and resorted to a long ball game in the closing minutes and nearly snatched a draw but for a great block by Mark Bennett and good sweeping up by the other defenders. We are all off on the Hols now and wish Damo and the Big Rig all the best on their pending nuptials to Aisling and Oonagh respectively, Ulster says no but will the Boys say yes???(I was going to ask will they be allowed say anything else but that would be in bad taste to two of the hardiest Hoors on the panel). Training resumes in Letterkenny next Thursday night, see yis in the Cottage.

Na Fianna 0-15 v- Clann Na Gael 1-11, AFL Div 4, DCU. 7.30 p.m. 20th July 2004.

Back to Basics for Na Fianna in a crucial league match. Only Injury worry was 'Risquo' Kinsella who is recording in Rio. well Risquo did not play but his brother 'Frisko' was rejuvenated by a move to centre forward and played a prominent role in this one point victory. Brian Courtney made his first start in a competitive game for some time and ended scoring four points from play. There was great movement by all of the Na Fianna players in the first half with the wide field suiting their expansive style of play. Time after time a simple diagonal ball was played to devastating effect and exposed the physically stronger Clanns men to one on one situations with their more fleet of foot opponents. Danjo Mc Gowan and Kearnser lorded mid-field and O'Hagan profited in his role as a third mid-fielder scavanging for breaking ball to set up Na Fianna attacks.

Half time Na Fianna led by seven, 0-9 to 0-2. The 2nd half proved a different story. Na Fianna tired somewhat and fell into their bad habit of conceding unnecessary frees in scorable positions. Clanns bravely clawed their way back to within 4 points when their impressive half time sub(No 20) scored a goal from a breaking ball. Game On. Suddenly questions were being asked of Na Fianna's bottle and the answers were none too convincing. However the lads dug deep to pilfer  four scores to pull away in the last five minutes. Suddenly Na Fianna were hauled back and it was level going into injury time Courtney popped what was a likely winner only to see it cancelled by a free from Close range. Then, some five mins into injury time Na Fianna broke up the pitch and a clever ball by Danjo found Mc Giolla Rua on the 21. He was hauled to the ground by Clanna, Ciaran O'Murchu and Mc Gauran slotted over the resulting free to win the game with the last kick thereof. Relief for Na Fianna, Disappointment for Clann. Thomas Davis await us next Sunday. The DCU Hoodoo was broken.

Na Fianna 0-8, Kolmacud Qwokes 1-11, O'Toole Park, 3rd July 2004.

Na Fianna meekly bowed out of this years Junior Champo with a dissappointing loss to Kilmacud. Despite a bright opening from the Na Fianna forwards, particularly Barrry Newman, Na Fianna always found it difficult against a stronger Crokes side.

Early optomism faded as Na Fianna were forced to take hopeful pot shots from difficult angles, while Crokes forwards profited to a greater degree. The Na Fianna defence was led by Gary Mc Gauran and held its own in the first half. A serious knee injury to Richie Kinsella( flowers on the way from Sorcha!!!!!) did not help matters and Na Fianna were four points down at half time. Mark Foley was introduced to bolster the forward line however we had a disasterous start to leave us six points adrift with 20 mins. to go. A Kilmacud goal seemed to enliven Na Fianna and a rally of sorts was staged however even that petered out disappointingly and Crokes won by six.

Na Fianna used their full complement of subs, but their forwards with the possible exception of Johnner Kearns were fighting a losing battle all night. Some of the players did belatedly master the basics of tackling in Moody Mattie Donlon's Bouncy Castle, some hours later on Hollybank Road.

So Na Fianna dust themselves down and prepare for crucial league games against Clann na Gael and Thomas Davis next week. In the interim the team depart for Waterford for the Big Rig's stag which is being held in conjunction with the Irish Yorkie Bar Eaters and Truckers convention in The Tower Hotel.Training resumes this Thursday. We await details of the venue due to Inter Hurling fixture at the Aras

Na Fianna v Ballyboughal. Balgriffin @ 11 a.m. Sunday 20-06-04.

A whirlwind start by Na Fianna saw them race into a 1-3 to 0-1 lead within the first five minutes. Richie Kinsella shook off a dose of something or other to tog out and score a soccer style goal. In truth Na Fianna were alwas in command and their superiority was confirmed by another goal from Mark Foley and some assured freetaking from Paul Mc Gauran.

Danjo Mc Gowan and Ronan O'Hagan were dominating midfield and our defence was on top throughout. Just before half time Neil O'Ceallachain released a diagonal ball across to Richie Kinsella who floated a ball into the parallelogram for O'Hagan who gracefully directed the ball to the net to notch a contender for goal of the month.

Despite a strongly worded speach by coaches Norton and Henchy and talk of lollipops Na Fiannna took the foot off the gas a little. The full quota of subs were released into the fray for the final quarter wherein the game became quite scrappy but Na Fianna ran out easy winners on a scoreline of 3-15 to 0-10 points. Next up KilmOcud Qwokes.

Despite receiving a bit of drubbing at the hands of the Clane Senior team last Sunday morning the Inters continue to prepare for a bigger match this weekend. Report to follow.

Na Fianna 1-13 Inisfails 0-3.

Full report to follow. Comprehensive victory for improving Inters.

2004 Season has begun for the Inter Footballers. Lar Norton and Adrian Henchy have teamed up to lead the attack on our bid to win some silverwear. Lar Norton has been involved over the past four years and Adrian Henchy has returned from his holidays in Jersey, where he was manager of the successful Jersey Irish GFC. The panel has been strengthened by the Addition of Brian Courtney, Matthew Donnelan and Colin O'Donnell for Junior 3s and a few new lads, Willie and Ronan, have joined the panel along with some old faces returning from senior(hopefully and subject to regrades being approved)

Training is going well and Numbers are constantly around the 20-22 mark. Two friendlies have been played and We beat Mearnog 2-13 to 2-06 last week and beat Ballymun 2-10 TO 1-10 Yesterday in Collinstown. The first half display against Mearnog was particularly impressive being characterised by fast, flowing football and clinical score-taking.

Crack open the Champers for Larry Maguire who weds Joanne Boyle this coming Friday. In tieing the Knot Mad dog Maguire will break the hearts of countless young Belles around Na Fianna and Ballymun/Glasnevin area. Most of the team will be there to witness the event and attend to the broken hearted. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday with a back to reality sesion planned for next Sunday morning.

On a sombre note, all of the team extend their condolonces to John O'Neill and his family on their recent bereavement.

All inter footballers are called to a players meeting on Sunday next to plan for the forthcoming season. It is very much in your interest to attend as training resumes next week.

5th December 2003:-          The return of the Last of Na Fianna's Travellers will happen when Baz Newman touches down in Dublin Airport at 2 p.m. today. As a gesture of their great delight the Intermediate team have arranged a welcome home party beginning in The Hut, Phibsborough, Tonight at 8 p.m. The Na Fianna Santa(You know who No. 5) will be bunking off from the Christmas grotto at Michael Guineys a couple of hours early to make the Gig and distribute end of season gifts to assembled team members. The official Xmas party takes place on Saturday the 13th at Mulligans of Stoneybatter. Throw in at 7.00p.m. Full turn-out requested. Santa is unfortunately doublebooked so we have asked Jasper to do the honours and dress up as Frosty the Snowman.

Like a bad wine Na Fianna's season steadily disimproved as they reached the end of their season. Having been in a commanding position on top of the league table by August the Inters forgot how to win a game and ended up losing matches to Round Towers of Lusk and Vincents to relinquish pole position to Ballymun Kickhams. In truth it was the one point loss to Round Towers that crippled Na Fianna who uncharacteristically conceded two soft goals within the first ten minutes. Despite injuries and a thousand other excuses that could be made the match was there for the taking but Na Fianna did not have the resolve to dig out a result. Further disappointment was to follow as we bowed out of the Joy Cup and the best hat could be hoped for was a promotion play off spot.

This was achieved when we beat Annes in the league and left us in joint second place but it was decided to concede a walkover to Inisfails in our final league game on the Bank Holiday Monday and in doing so we s;ipped from joint second to fifth in the table and lost home advantage in the play-offs. Not to be deterred we set out against Vincents on the 2nd of November with what was arguably our strongest team of the year. In a scrappy match we could only manage to score 1-3 (while shooting 16 wides) and ended up losing by two points. Credit to Brian Courtney who came on as a second half sub and scored 1-1 as well as terrorising the Vincent's defence. And so a season that promised much but delivered diddly squat ended in disappointing fashion. The players would like to thank Lar and Kevin for their huge investment of time over the past season and Jasper for his attendance on match days. If some of the players had mirrored their dedication for the full(as opposed to one half of) the season then we might be talking AFL Div 3 next year. Yet hope spings eternal and with the injection of some Junior 3 players, one or two regrades and the return of Pauley, Baz and Kearnser to the fold we could realise our as yet untapped potential.

That's it, over and out, go back to yer families and confess what you've done and we'll see you over at the yellow cone in early January. One last thing Don't forget the Christmas party in 'The Thomas House' 22nd Dec 2003.

Junior Championship 1/4 Final, 7th September 2003, St Brigids 2-9, Na Fianna 1-8. Balgriffin.

Na Fianna's championship aspirations faltered in disappointing fashon on Sunday afternoon. Brigids began strongly and were two points up after five minutes having profited from high balls breaking off their full forward Sean Duignan. Na Fianna kept in touch with a fisted point from Roney Mac Giolla Ruaidh, which he quickly followed with a free from 35 yards out. Na Fianna's defence were not as assured as in previous matches and Brigids took advantage with thei midfielder punching a goal from a dropping free.

Na Fianna fought back but found it impossible to get into any rhythm and numerous passes went astray and scorable chances were wasted. It was 1-6 to 3points at halftime.

The second half was far more entertaining and The Na Fianna team worked to reel in the Brigid's lead. Donal 'The Shadow' Keegan was sent off after being provoked by the Brigids number 7. His dismissal was a real turning point as he was winning a huge amount of ball in a very congested mid-field. Caoimhin O'Coigli raised a green flag with a rasper to the top left hand corner from about 20 yards. This raised the Na Fianna spirits and the lead was cut to two points. At this point Na Fianna went all out for victory but took a sucker punch when Brigids number11 cooly finished to the net at the clubhouse goal. Despite the best efforts of Eoin Diamond, Thomas Kinsella and Ronan Mc GiollaRuaidh Na Fianna could not bridge the gap and saw their championship hopes go up in the Balgriffin smoke. Team: F Scanlon, D Mullen, LFay, C Gilligan, T Kinsella, E Diamond, L Maguire, M Foley, M Bennett, F Walsh, D Keegan, C O'Coigli, A Shearer, R Mac Gioilla Ruaidh, J Hagan, P O'Carroll for Hagan, P Mac Suibhne for O'Coigli

Junior Championship 2nd round. 22nd August 2003, Portmarnock, Na Fianna 3-11, Naomh Barrog 0-7.

Na Fianna began this championship match in nervous fashion as they struggled to cope with a fast moving Barrog full forward line. Barrogs drew first blood with an early free before Ronan Mc Giolla Ruaidh got Na Fianna off the mark. Changes were made to combat the Barrog tactics of playing a two man full forwrad line. John O'Neill tracked their tall full forward and Leo Fay picked up their mobile number 8 who was their main threat. This move by the selectors reaped reward andNa Fianna took some nice scores by Aaron Shearer from the side line and a Mark Foley effort.

When Caoimhin O'Coigli finished to the net after 20 minutes Na Fianna began to play their best football. The corner backs were playing impressively and Richie Kinsella in the unfamiliar position of left half back snuffed out any attacks at source. This period saw early ball being played directly to the full forward line invariably leading to a Na Fianna score. Na Fianna led by 1-7 to 0-4 ta half time.

The second half saw the expected Barrog rally and a sideline freeby their number 11 and a couple more scores closed the gap somewhat. However Na Fianna upped the pace and wiht the introduction of Cider O'Carroll, Mark Bennett, Lar Maguire, Gerry the Belly, Na Fianna finished the stronger to the delight of their considerable support who turned up on th night. In a clean game the Referee was assisted by his umpires and must be commended for his fairness.

Football Challenge, Currahaga, 27th July 2003, Curragha 1-5, Na Fianna 1-15.

A Football game in the rolling fields of County Meath provided the Na Fianna Inters with a reasonable opportunity to stretch their limbs on Curragha's field last Sunday morning. This was a somewhat experimental Na Fianna side which was assisted by four Junior 3 players who showed very well throughout. Pol Mc Suibhne also made his debut scoring 1-2 into the bargain.

A new midfield pairing of Tomi K and Mark Foley won everything at midfield setting up their forwards for score after score, the most impressive one coming from young Sweeney mid-way through the first period. Such was Na Fianna's dominance Paul Stone had the audacity to create a one two movement with Richie K before putting the ball inches wide of the cossbar. 1-8 to 0-1 at half time.

Curragha were more focused in the second half and made a decent game of it for the final 30. A fortuituous goal lifted their spirits momentarily but Na Fianna were always able to retort with a score to keep daylight between the sides. An uneventful final 10 saw Na Fianna run out easy winners. It was off to the snail box for a lucozade sport before returning to the big smoke when Mark Foley saw his life flash before his eyes on the M50 Roundabout. All Alfa Romeo drivers should have their licences revoked and made drive a '89 Diahatsu Charade if the driving of the plonker that almost wrote off the boatrace is anything to go by.

Joy Cup,  20th July 2003, Na Fianna 0-7, Thomas Davis, DCU.

DCU continues to be 'A Donkey around yer shoulders'(as opposed to a monkey on yer back) to quote a former Dublin Football Great. The Inters never quite got to grips with the running game of Thomas Davis who attacked with purpose all through the game. No scores from play tells its own story and if it were not for the perfect free taking of Ronie Mc Giolla Rua, Davises would have finished further ahead, otherwise  we wouldn't have hit a bag full of cats. A Stirling display by Macca 'Muicin Beag' Mc Carthy was one of the few positives taken from this game and with the water Polo season suspended due to the City Council hose pipe ban, numerous members of the backline will be looking over their shoulders to keep their place on the team.

Championship is only around the corner and a huge effort is required to keep the Inter Boat afloat. Preparations continue with a friendly against Curraha, in Curraha, at 11.30 next Sunday morning. We are still in a strong position to qualify for the semi final of the Cup having collected six points out of a possible eight. Please note that the tables on Hill 16.ie are incorrect and we have 6 from 8 in the cup and 20 from 22 in the league. Anyone who has not sold tickets for the draw please sell at least on before next Sunday's Early Bird draw.

AFL DIV 4 22nd June 2003, Na Fianna 0-11, Clann Na nGael Fontenoy 0-11, St. Clares DCU.

Depending on what School of philosophy you attended tis match can be viewed as a point lost or a point gained. Those who of the Stoic variety would say it was a tough battle, which swung to and fro with both teams deserving of something. The optomists would point to a number of wides and handy frees awarded for silly fouls on the man and against the ball in front of goals.

Either way this was a match which CNaG had to win and Na Fianna could not afford to lose. Cna G began well and scored the first point from an easy free. Na Fianna stormed back to score three on the trot with Rickra K hoovering up an amount of breaking ball across the half forward line. Roney Mac scored a free and Aaron Shearer further extended our lead. Positional changes allowed CnaG to get back into the game to level it at four all after twenty minutes. Big John O'Neill and the Boatrace dug deep to work two further scores before half time. We only led by two having had the wind at our backs.

Na Fianna did not panic in the second half and maintained their lead with scores from Mark Foley and Vinny Walsh, however a purple patch by Cna G saw their impressive corner forward score direct from a short free. From here on in the full back line of Bennett Fay and Fleming tightened up and left it to the forwards to get two further scores with leaving three between the teams with 8 mins to go. Two scores from the CNA G numbers twelve and nine left the minimum between the teams. Some inspirational blocking led by Lar Maguire kept Cna G at bay and it was looking good until the ref blew the belly for picking straight off the ground. Needless to say the Belly vented his fury at the Ref and he obliged by moving the ball 14 yards from a difficult to scorable position. Draw game.

All was not lost and Downsie put through to TK before he was flattened, Eoin Diamond (aged 23 and a half) was fed the final passbut put his shot to the right and wide for the games last action.

The Inters retired to the Diggers for a game of Frisby safe in the knowledge that they had maintained their unbeaten run and that they have four weeks to strengthen their forces before the next league match. No doubt the scattered masses of the Inter diaspora will be surfing through in the coming days and to you we say hurry home as the troops are being spread thin across the front line. By the way best wishes to Rickra the Bullet who chipped his thumb and is k'od for the next 4 weeks. Surprisingly the Inters have yet to win a match at the 'Home venue' in DCU, quality surface but a tad narrow for football.

AFLDIV 4 17th June 2003, St. James Emmets 1-7, Na Fianna 3-18, Greentrees Road.

The Inters first away fixture for some time yielded a two point haul from Greentrees Road on Tuesday Night. A scorching start saw Na Fianna lead by 3-5 to 0-2 after fifteen minutes. The start was due to a Mark Foley penalty, Joe Hagan goal and own goal from an Emmet's player who palmed a Boatrace cross past his Keeper, no doubt the Boatrace will claim the score but it was a clear og.

Further impressive scores from Aaron Shearer and Roney Mac saw a telling contribution being made by the full forward line. Alas Donal Keegan or 'The Shadow' did not get on the score sheet having to retire early with a sore leg. James Emmets threatened in patches ant their nos 10 and 14 scored the bulk of their points but in truth the match was over as a contest by half time.

Deano Casso and the Belly were introduced for the second half and Tommy Mac stood in goals for Scanno, one of his kickouts took off like an exorcet and nearly reached the outer atmosphere. More scores could have been tagged on and Tommy K would have bagged a goal had he not turned away to celebrate before his open goal chance came back off the post. All in all a pleasing result for the Inters who made their way back to the dressing through the hayfield to contemplate next weekends match versus Cna Gael.

AFL DIV 4 8th June 2003, Na Fianna 1-13, Ballymun Kickhams 0-11.

A sun splashed Mobhi Road witnessed a fine Na Fianna victory over their keen rivals on Sunday last. This top of the table clash saw two teams vieing to secure a stanglehold on the leadership of Division 4. Ballymun raced into a two point lead in the first five minutes however scores form Vinny Walsh and Roney Mac settled the Na Fianna nerves. Neither team really asserted themselves on the early stage of the game and scores were swapped routinely. Richie Kinsella spurned a glorious goal chance when he passed the ball back to the Kickhams Keeper rather than shooting low and hard as he is told to do in training.

Ballymun came back with a point that was not a point. Macca's Brother Derek was as adamant as the Kickmams umpire that a dropped shot from the Kickhams No 14 had crept inside the post. Macca's bro was replaced by the able Badge Murphy whose visual senses were in prime condition having played a major role in Operation Quest or spot the lap dancer with a working visa. But revenge is a dish best served cold and the Kickhams umpire was to get his own come uppence when he was hight straight in the mush by a stray Aaron Shearer shot during the half time kick around.

Six all at half time the teams re-emerged for an exciting second half. Joe Hagan moved to midfield to replace a tierd John O'Neill and the move reaped a rich reward when the man from Monaghan buried a shot to left of the keeper at the Homefarm Road end. Time, however, was on Kickhams side and three scores form their number 12(Lee) reduced the deficit to two points. Na Fianna showed strong resolve and a couple of scores from Roney and Vinny Wlash pushed the lead back to four. Kickhams refused to lie down and were unlucky not to score a goal or two in the final ten minutes when their forwards opted to for points. It has to be said that Scanno did narrow the angle very well. Pauley Walnuts had the final say when scoring the final point of the day in a move that began with Tomi K picking up a break in midfield and moving the ball through five Na Fianna players before the white flag was raised. Final score 1-13 to 0-11, we think. Best of luck to walnuts and Daibhide on their travels. Hope to see you at the end o' summer. Special mention to Cider on his travels to Australia. Keep it lit Cider. The latest betting on a Murraroa Atol like explosion being heard about 11 a.m. on Wednesday morning is as follows. Scanno 30 sec. Leo 20 sec. Roney 97 sec. Shabba 120 sec. Tomi K 45 sec. Boatrace 5 min. Walnuts 5 sec. Tommy Mac 3 mins. Dualta 7 mins. Norton never, Elaine before the event.

We'll trust you to have the stop watch at the ready, Cider.

AFL Div 4 Sunday 25th May 2003. Na Fianna 3-11, Erins Isle 0-6.

A Local derby to savour became a damp squib very early on as Na Fianna disposed of their neighbours, who had held somewhat of an Indian sign over them in the past two seasons. An early goal by Roney settled the nerves and this was followed by points from all angles of the pitch as Na Fianna laid seige to the Isles goal. The Wee man from Cavan may have had a brace but sensibly opted to hand pass over the bar.

It was 1-8 to 0-3 at half time and Na Fianna's management were visibly and audibly disappointed, indeed some of the spectators vented their displeasure with the hierarchy. A rejuvenated second half saw the Boatrace and Tomi K to the fore in driving their team on to an easy victory. Further, some might say fortuituous, goals by the abovementioned wee man and Steo Fitz shaped a final scoreline, which in no way flattered the victors.

Best of luck to the Nelly, Beman and Fitz on their travels in the USA. Your presence will be missed and all the team echo Buller's sentiments in saying 'Hurry on back' especially if the moths are too Damo Duff in Califoria.

AFL Div. 4 Sunday 11th May 2003. 11 a.m. Mobhi Road. Na Fianna 1-11 Thomas Davis 1-05.

A top of the table clash and massive test for the Inters was played out on Sunday last. Coming into the game Thomas Davis had dropped only two points, to Clann na Gael and Na Fianna had dropped THAT one to Naomh Mearnog. Conditions were perfect for summer football.

Na Fianna settled well with early points from Lar Maguire and Paul Mc Gahern. A couple of further chances were missed before Davises got their first score from a close in free. The home side then suffered a setback when Mark Bennett went off with an injured groin. His replacement aka'The Belly' adapted well only to be shown a straight red after ten minutes for what can only be described as harmless scuffling. The management immediately rejigged the team. Joe Hagan, who had made the trip from home that morning, came on for Cider O'Carroll and Ronan Mc Giolla Ruaidh made his way to familiar territory in the full back line. The Belly's dismissal seemed to spur Na Fianna on and scores by Mark Foley and Mc Gahern saw Na Fianna lead by three at half time.

The second half witnessed some of Na Fianna's best football of the season. Score after score was taken culminating in a tremendous goal for Paul Mc Gahern, collecting the ball, rounding his marker and shoting low to the bottom left hand corner. At the other end Na Fianna's defence coped with whatever came their way and the midfield diamond was doing it's job winning ball and finding a Na Fianna shiirt every time. Thomas Davis did have two goal opportunities but their number 13 was blocked (possibly by a stray foot) on one occasion and their no. 5 was foiled by an excellent Fearghal Scanlon save around the post. Thomas Davis finished stongly even after their no. 11 was dismissed for some more minor scuffling. They eventually breached the Na Fianna net with a penalty in the dieing moments. Work this one out. Thomas Davis forward fouled about four to five feet from the 14 yard line. Same player attempts to take a quick free and, having stolen a couple of feet, ends up inside the parallellogram when striking the ball. His shot is illegally foot-blocked (Mea Culpa Refferee) and The Ref decides to award a penalty. OK it was not a fourteen yard free so he was entitled to take a quick one, but not from inside the parallellogram and he was certainly not entitled to be rewarded with a penalty. Such is football and Na Fianna still won 1-11 to 1-05 so no-one was complaining.

It was vice-captain Newman's last match before he crosses the pond and the panel wish him all the best. Don't fall asleep in any strange place Baz as you might end up with more than a Taco Fries in your trousers, Know what we mean!!!!. Hope you're back in one piece for the 2nd half of the season.

AFL Div.4 Thursday 8th May 2003. Scoil Ui Chonaill 1-11, Na Fianna 2-11. Cluain Tairbh.

Following a battle with the rush hour traffic Na Fianna faced an even tougher battle to overcome a determined and physically stronger Scoil side. A good start by Na Fianna saw Ronan Mac Giolla Ruaidh and Paul Mc Gahern drive them to a 1-3 to 0-1 lead inside fifteen minutes. A number of substitutions and positional changes saw Scoil reel in Na Fianna's lead with scores by their mobile half forward line. It was 1-5 to 0-5 in favour of Na Fianna at half time.

The half time break disrupted Na Fianna's impressive momentum and within ten minutes there was only a point between the sides. Scoil switched their towering mid-fielder, Enda Newton, to the full forward and began raining bombs in his direction. This move reaped dividend and seemed to create acres of room for Scoil in midfield who attacked Na Fianna from every angle. Some impressive defending by Lar Maguire and Mark Bennett stemmed their advances and intelligent use of the ball by Mark Foley, Tom Kinsella and Neil O'Ceallachain set up further scores for the Na Fianna forwards and create the chance for Stephen Fitzgerald crash home a vital goal. Eoin Diamond came into his own to create an essential link between defence and attack. This left the scores at 2-10 to 0-11 in Na Fianna's favour with five to go. Scoil refused to lie down and a penalty with two minutes to go left for a dramatic finale. However Na Fianna refused to panic to calmly move up the field for Barry Newman to score the final point of the game from his cultured left boot. All in a good nights work by the Na Fianna lads.

Team: F Scanlon, M Bennett, L Fay, N O'Ceallachain, T Kinsella, E Diamond, L Maguire, J O'Neill, M Foley, B Newman, E Casserly, S Behan, P O'Carroll, R Mac Giolla Ruaidh, P Mc Gahern. Subs: S Fitzgerald, D Laird, F Deignan, D Mullan, S Caffrey.

AFL Div. 4 Sun. 26th April 2003, 11 a.m. Na Fianna 0-10 -v- Fingallians 0-5.

Two valuable league points were secured at Mobhi Road on Sunday Morning. A strong first half performance was the foundation upon which this victory was secured. Due to a combination of injuries and suspensions N a Fianna were forced to re-jig their line out. New full forward Ronan Mac Giolla Ruaidh profited from some fine delivery from his half forwards and particularly from Mark Foley who was revitalised by his move to mid-field. Richie Kinsella was to the fore and scored two lovely points in quick succession to extend our lead to 0-7 to 0-2 at half time.

The second half was a less spectacular performance and Na Fianna tacked on three more points to put the result beyond doubt. Mark Bennett was Na Fianna's man of the match easily snuffing out Fingallians attacking moves time and time again. Cider O'Carroll made a welcome return due to the unavailability of Paul Mc Gahern.

Team: F Scanlon, M Bennett, L Fay, C Gilligan, T Kinsella, E Diamond, L Maguire, M Foley, J O'Neill, R Kinsella, E Cassidy, B Newman, S Behan, R Mac Giolla Ruaidh, P O'Carroll. Subs S Fitzgerald, D Mullan, F Deignan, T Mc Guan.

Joy Cup. Friday 18th April 2003. Na Fianna 2-10, St. Annes 1-5.

Na Fianna Inters scored their third victory of the competition over St. Annes on Good Friday. In a scrappy first half Na Fianna scored only three points and shot twelve terrible wides. A big improvement in the second half saw Na Fianna cut loose despite a spirited performance by Annes who were buoyed by a bizzare goal scored by Dave De Lappe. At the final whistle Na Fianna were happy to have gained two further points in this cup competition but will be less than happy with the manner of their victory. A welcome return to Mark 'Johnsie'Johnson after a one year absence.

AFL Div. 4. Na Fianna 0-12, Naomh Mearnog 1-09, Mobhi Rd 13th April 2003.

Na Fianna Inters dropped their first point of the season in a hard fought game last Sunday morning. Were it not for an injury time penalty scored by Mearnogs the Inters would have maintained their 100% record.

Both sets of forwards were moving well early on however Na Fianna wer 0-3 to 0-1 up after ten minutes. Some uncharacteristic mistakes in front of goal allowed Mearnogs back into the match and it was 0-7 to 0-6 in their favour at half time. The second half was nip and tuck until Joe Hagan was sent to the line, with 20 minutes remaining. This seemed to spur the Na Fianna lads onwards and with the aid of an inspirational point form Centre Back Tom Kinsella and some virtuoso finishing by Paul Mc Gahern they led by three points with a minute of injury time having elapsed. Mearnogs needed a goal and when Na Fianna unnecessarily surrendered possession they came hunting in numbers. An overlap was worked and Leo Fay was adjudged to have fouled Mearnogs number ten. The resulting penalty was scored and Mr. Barrett blew for full time and the end of a sometimes contoeversial match.

Team. F Scanlon, G Fleming, L Fay, N O'Ceallachain, C Gilligan, T Kinsella, R Mc Giolla Ruaidh, E Diamond, L Maguire, B Newman, J Hagan, S Behan, J Deane, M Foley, P Mc Gahern. Subs. M Bennett for Fleming, S Fitzgerald for Deane, PO'Carroll, D Laird, F Deignan, E Cassidy.

Clann Mhuire 0-5 Na Fianna 2-10, The Naul, 30th March 2003.

Na Fianna made it three out of three in the Div 4 league on Sunday morning last. In what was probably their most comprehensive display so far this season. An early goal by Mark Foley followed by a well taken point from Richie Kinsella settled the nerves. At the other end Clann Mhuire were living off scraps depending on their bulky corner forward for all their scores from play.

A fisted goal by Joe Hagan from a 45 kick increased Na Fianna's lead and at half time they led by eight points 2-04 to 0-2. Clann Mhuire appeared for the second half with some of their more experienced players to the fore and the match developed into a scrappy and physical affair. However scores from Eoin Diamond and Leo Fay increased the lead further and the match was as good as over with ten to go. The most exciting event thereafter was Lar Maguire's highly charged warm down. Pints in Killeens were avoided in the rush made the 23k trip back to the Clubhouse to watch the rugby.

Team. F Scanlon, N O'Ceallachain, L Fay, C Gilligan, L Maguire, T Kinsella, R Mac Giolla Ruaidh, J O'Neill, E Diamond, B Newman, J Hagan, R Kinsella, J Deane, M Foley, S Behan,  Subs. G Fleming for J'ONeill, S Fitzgerald for B Newman, D Laird for R Kinsella, E Cassidy, F Deignan, S Caffrey, T Mc Guan, M Bennett.

Clann Na Gael 0-5 Na Fianna 3-7 Ringsend 23rd March 2003.

The Inters defeated an understrength Gaels team in the pleasent surroundings of Ringsend Park last Sunday. After a sluggish start Na Fianna worked the extra man to their advantage and took some nice scores. A much improved 2nd half performance saw Marco Foley finish with with 3-2 to his name and the match ball on his return to competitive action. Team also saw Shabba Caffrey make his season's debut in the second half. All in all an average enough performance. The team wish Mark Mc Gahern a speedy recovery from his recent injury.

Team: Mc Guan, Fleming, Fay, Deignan, Gilligan, Kinsella (T), Bennett, Diamond, O'Neill, Laird, Hagan, Kinsella (R) Newman, Foley, Mc Gahan. Subs:- Scanlon, Mullan, Caffrey, Mc Giolla Ruaidh.

Result. AFL Div. 4. 2nd March 2003. Naomh Mhuire 0-8, Na Fianna 0-9. Na Fianna led 0-7 to 0-1 at half time. Marys came storming back in the second half to come within one point. Crucial scores from Stephen Behan and Pauley Mc Gahan kept enough daylight between the teams to leave us on the right side of the score at the final whistle.

Na Fianna 2-12 Naomh Mhuire 0-5 Joy Cup.

A convincing win over an understrength Naomh Mhuire on a fine Sping morning. Expect a far tougher assignment against the same team in their first league fixture since gaining Intermediate status and hopefully the lads will be on their best behaviour at the Christening: -].
