30 June
Our great friends and rivals from Kilmacud U10 will visit for a streamed blitz on Sat June 30.

Monday May 7
15 players represented the U10 squad at The Tommy Burtchill Memorial Tournament in Limerick. Tommy Burtchill was our own Colm's uncle, brother of Paddy. This tournnment is hosted annually for Under 10s by the Na Piarsaigh Limerick club to honour Tommy's memory and his contribution to underage hurling there. It was appropriate that given our links with Tommy's family, we should enter the A Division of this 11-a-side competition.
A pipe band lead a parade of all players from the 7 participating clubs around the field, who then stood to attention for a fine rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann! Talk about raising the tension & creating an atmosphere!
Game 1: Na Fianna 5-4, Newport (Tipperary) 1-2.
The scoreline deceives somewhat, as we pulled away from these skilful Tipp boys in the final quarter of this opening game. Only 2-1 to 0-1 up at half time, great second half displays from all our players, including Ciarán Casserly, Luke Fenton, Eoin O'Sullivan and Michael Gaffney, (who bounced back from several injuries), ensured a good start.
Game 2: Na Fianna 3-2, Na Piarsaigh 1-1.
A much tougher assignment! Having won the toss, we elected to start against the near galeforce wind, but managed to hold the opposition scoreless, with sterling defence from Martin Neary in goal, Matthew Oliver, Mark Sewell and the great Hugh Fenlon. Indeed, we we unlucky not to score ourselves, despite playing against the elements.
With wind assistance in the 2nd half, and great hurling from John Pringle and Ciarán O'Connor in midfield, the balance of play shifted in our favour. Two goals from Pádraig Buggy, switched to the attack, and another from Cathal Doran, set us up for a 2nd win, and put us through to the final.
Final: Doon (Limerick) 6-6, Na Fianna 5-2 (after extra time)
Doon 4-4, Na Fianna 5-1 (Full-time)
This highly skilful Doon team were eventually deserving winners in a truly thrilling final, with the lead changing hands no fewer than 8 occasions, and the sides level four times. Doon raced into an early 1-2 lead, but first half goals from Ciarán O'Connor, another beauty from Eoin Skelly (the classy ciotóg) and Dara McDonagh kept us on level terms at half time.
Again Doon opened up a 4 point lead and seemed in a comfortable position midway through the half, but a great kicked goal from Seán Caffrey (where did he learn to do that?!) sparked a Na Fianna revival. A Doon goal from a free restored their lead, and with the last play of the game, as announced by the referee, Pádraig Buggy pointed a real pressure '65' to force the game to extra time, unprecedented in this competition.
Unfortunately for us, Doon took their scoring chances better than us in this period, coming out deserving winners. Nonetheless, our boys have gained excellent experience at the highest national level this weekend, which will help us enhance our play going forward. DB
Saturday May 5
Another great day's hurling with the return visit to St. Mobhi Road of our new friends from the famous Na Piarsaigh club in Cork City.
Re-seeding of the main pitch meant the back pitch was in use for two mini-pitches, with the all-weather surface as the third pitch.
Commencing with balanced teams, six games of ten minutes each way were played in this format, Na Fianna winning only one, but remaining competitive in all but one of the games lost.
Then the format was switched to two streamed 15-a-side matches. Despite a gallant effort, the B team received a tutorial in hurling from their more skilful Cork peers, which included 7-8 strong U9 players.
We embrace the philosophy that 'success is what we do with our defeats', so this will help us all improve our standards of performance going forward.
Our A team however, repeated the narrow victory achieved in Cork on a scoreline of 2-5 to 1-3 in a most intense and hard fought 40 minute game played in 23°C heat, with man-of-the-match performances from Ciarán Hannify for Na Piarsaigh and Hugh Fenlon for Na Fianna.
Afterwards, the club carvery team lead by Aidan Irwin was hired to provide the catering for some 65 adults and 80 children, which was excellent, and enabled all parents to enjoy the hurling instead of 'slaving over a hot stove' to look after our guests.
Our gracious guests were most appreciative, and we are already looking forward to the next instalment of our friendly rivalry, perhaps as soon as the autumn.
We did our club proud today, on and off the pitch.
Many thanks to all the mentors and parents for their countless selfless contributions which enabled all to have such an enjoyable day.
Sat May 5 Upcoming
Cork Na Piarsaigh will return visit after our most memorable visit to them on 31 March.
Players are requested to text Donal Buggy 086.8313315 if unavailable in the usual way.
Participating players are requested to bring €20 each to cover cost of lunch for the player himself, a parent and our Na Piarsaigh guests.
The food will be prepared by Aidan Irwin, the club's catering contractor, who has successfully launched the club's weekend lunchtime carvery.
This will mean that the responsibility for catering will not fall too heavily on a small group of parents, and everyone can watch the boys hurling.
Monday 7 May:
A group of our U10 hurlers will represent the club at the Paddy Burchaell Tournament,
hosted by Na Piarsaigh Limerick on Bank Holiday Monday (same name, different club from our Leeside friends on Saturday!).
After discussion among all the mentors, 15 players were invited to attend, because only one team from each participating club is allowed (11 a side with maximum 4 substitutes).
The intrepid hurlers are in a group with Na Piarsaigh Limerick our hosts, Doon Co Limerick and Newport Co. Tipperary.
Players are asked to arrive Limerick at 1230.
A convoy will leave Na Fianna at 0930 sharp that morning.
If you need a lift, please contact Donal Buggy.
1/4/07:
Memorable Leeside tour again this year, thanks to our kind hosts, Na Piarsaigh. We enjoyed wonderful hospitality including hot food in their excellent club complex after a fantastic hurling blitz. Three simultaneous 10 a side games (20 min) with balanced teams were played to start, after which the teams rotated and played again. Then two final streamed games of 15 a side were played, our first attempt to do so. In the event both 15 a side games were won in addition to 3 of the 6 balanced games.
We thank Neil Sullivan and his colleagues again and look forward to their return visit on Sat May 5.
