9th October 2007 - semi final /end of year report
U15 Championship Semi Final
Na Fianna 1-1 St Vincents 5-7
Our U15’s exited the championship at the semi final stage in the Phoenix Park on Sunday. We came up against a strong ,skilful and determined St Vincents outfit. The scoreline suggests a hammering but in truth our girls competed well for long stages and it was only in the second half that Vincents got the goals that allowed them to pull away. Late in the game Na Fianna scored a consolation goal from Aoife Caffrey to add to a point from Shona Quinn.
Much dissapointment at the final whistle. However the mentors were pleased that all the girls who played gave 100% heart ,effort and passion. We couldn’t have asked for anymore. The mentors and players have committed to putting in a winter schedule of training sessions designed to raise the skill and fitness levels of the panel in order to compete more effectively against the other teams in our division next year.
We would like to thank the U14 mentors Sandra, John, Donal and Peter for their cooperation in making players available throughout the season and in particular last Sunday. The bottom line is that without these players we could not have fielded teams for many of our matches. We would like to congratulate the U13 and U14 teams on their great victories in the semi finals and assure them that we will be cheering them on to glory in the finals.
We would like to commiserate with the U16 team and mentors on losing their semi final last Saturday. A large number of the U15 panel have togged out for this team over the years and have taken part in joint training sessions. Therefore a strong bond exists between both panels. The stark realisation dawned over the weekend that Saturdays match was the last competitive game that these girls will play together as a group. The club owes a great debt to mentors Sorcha, Sinead and Pat who have taken this team from U11 up to U16 and along the way have nurtured some great players for club and county. This U16 panel have been involved in some great matches over the years, some wins some losses. All we can say is “thanks for the memories girls”.
A final word of thanks to the parents of our girls. Thanks for getting them to training on time, sometimes at the early hours of Saturday morning. Also thanks for helping with transport to matches, washing jerseys, sponsorship of equipment, supporting fundraisers, putting up nets, umpiring, etc. We really value your support.
Training is on a break this week and resumes on Tuesday October 16th.
Winter training schedule is as follows
- Tuesday 7.00 – 8.15 Mobhi Rd All Weather Pitch
- Saturday 10.00 – 11.15 Johnstown Park
1st October 2007
Na Fianna 4-2 Nmh Brid 0-1
Na Fianna beat Nmh Brid in the first round of U15 championship
in Albert College on Sunday morning. Na Fianna played down the slope
in the first half and even though they enjoyed the vast majority of
possession they found it hard to break through a determined Brigid’s
defence. Eve O’Brien settled nerves with a long range goal. As first
half wore on, a number of switches were made involving bringing on
Aine Gaughan + Lucy Collins and pushing Shona up into full forward.
Within a few minutes Shona cracked the ball into the net. 2-0 to 0-0 at
half time there was nothing between the sides.
In the second half Na Fianna girls picked up the pace and played some
great camogie. Lucy Collins scored a point and Captain Eve O’Brien played
an inspirational game and scored two more goals. Great performances
throughout the team including Naoise Webb at midfield, Ailish Neville and
Shona Quinn in full forward line. Great defensive work by Ellen in goal,
Aisling and Fiona in full back line and Orla Hogan in half back kept Brigid’s
down to just a point. Excellent contribution from the U14 contingent of Lucy,
Aine, Lisa, Susan, Khloe. Many thanks to all the U14’s who togged out having
played two championship games on Saturday.
Congratulation to all the girls on the Inter A team on beating St. Vincents to
claim the Inter A Championship title.

21st May 2007
Kilmacud Crokes 2-3 Na Fianna 3-5
We travelled away to Silverpark to play Kilmacud with the bare 15 players. As in previous matches Na Fianna started slowly and allowed the opposition to take the initiative. Kilmacud took 3 points to a point from Eve O’Brien for Na Fianna. We welcomed back Naoise Webb back from injury and she started in midfield with Aisling Murphy.
Half time score Kilmacud 0-3 Na Fianna 0-1. Mentors not overly concerned as Na Fianna created several goal chances but couldn’t finished them.
In the second half, an early goal from Eve O’Brien settled the nerves and put Na Fianna in front. However Kilmacud hit back with a goal of their own and we knew we were in a battle. Naoise switched with Eve at centre forward and Sadhbh came out to wing forward with Clare going in full forward. The changes worked as Sadhbh tagged on a couple of points and Naoise scored a goal and two points. Kilmacud still remained a threat but the game was secured for Na Fianna when Clare Taylor superbly doubled on the ball low and hard into the net. To their credit Kilmacud kept going and scored a late goal. However the whistle blew soon after and Na Fianna ran out winners 3-5 to 2-3 .
Notable performances on Na Fianna team included the full back line of Aoileann Ni Bhroin, Roisin Gallagher and Susan Clinton. Fiona McNally played well at wing back. Shona Quinn at centre back and Orla Hogan at wing back came into the game in the second half and dominated their opponents.
Aisling Murphy worked hard in the unfamiliar surroundings of midfield. Naoise understandingly tired in the second half but contributed immensely when moved to centre forward. Eve played her usual all action game and Sadhbh continued her run of fine performances in a Na Fianna jersey. The pick of the full forward line was Meabh Hanrahan who kept hassling her marker throughout the match.
Well done girls for bouncing back from a poor midweek result and we go into the summer break on the back of a good winning performance.
18th May 2007
Na Fianna 3-1 Naomh Barrog 2-6
Poor performance against a battling Naomh Barrog team. Na Fianna went into game missing a few players and playing some players in different positions. Eve O’Brien started in goal to allow Ellen Langan a rare start outfield. Barrog got into their stride early on and scored a quick goal. Their midfielder tagged on some very good points. Na Fianna found it hard to get a foothold in the match and didn’t score until Clare Taylors shot found the corner of the net close to half time. A gutsy display by Sadhbh Ni Nuallain in first half kept us in the game. Half time score : Barrog 1-4 Na Fianna 1-0
Changes at half time included bringing Eve back out to midfield and introducing subs Susan Clinton and Lisa McKenna. In second half Na Fianna couldn’t impose themselves on Barrog and also conceded a second goal. However the Na Fianna girls never gave up and two late goals by Ailish Neville and a long range effort from Shona Quinn brought us to within two points. Time was against us and the final whistle blew to give Barrog a deserved victory. Major disappointment for Na Fianna and the girls are determined to bounce back to winning ways against Kilmacud on Sunday.
13th May 2007
St Judes 4-7 vs Na Fianna 2-0
Tough match today against St. Judes. Na Fianna competed well in first half however
St. Judes pulled away with several points from Aoife Dunne who caused our
half back line problems. Na Fianna conceded two goals but got back into the
game with a powerful strike to the net from Aoileann Ni Bhroin.
Scoreline at half time was St. Judes 2-4 to 1-0.
Na Fianna came out fighting in the second half and soon scrambled a second goal.
Ellen Langan made some great saves in the second half however St. Judes proved
too strong on the day and ran out winners by 4-7 to 2-0.
Notable Na Fianna performances from Shona Quinn, Aishling Murphy in defence,
Eve O’Brien and Aine Gaughan in midfield and Ailish Neville, Meabh Hanrahan
in attack. Many thanks to Almaith Egan who turned up as a late replacement due to
two cry offs on the morning of the match.
Next match vs Naomh Barrog on Tuesday May 15th 7.30pm, venue back pitch at club.
10th May 2007
Ballyboden St Endas 3-0 Na Fianna 1-0
Missing a few key players U15’s travelled across to St Endas park to play Ballyboden.
On the journey over we encountered horrendous city traffic and therefore arrived late for the
throw in. Na Fianna were forced to take to the field almost immediately without going through
our normal warm up routine. Hence Ballyboden came out of the blocks very quickly and
dominated play in the first half. None of the Na Fianna girls managed to impose themselves
on the game and we were we lucky to be only two goals to no score at half time.
We also lost full back Roisin Gallagher to injury.
A few home truths and a bit of soul searching at half time did the trick.
In the second half Na Fianna played like a different team and dominated Boden in all areas
of the field. Susan Clinton, Aisling Murphy and Shona Quinn worked extremely hard in defence
against a dangerous Boden forward line. Captain Eve O’Brien and Fiona McNally broke up
play well in midfield and played good ball into the forward line. In the forwards Sadhbh Ni Nuallain
was superb at centre forward and Ailish Neville was a revelation in the corner having been
introduced as a sub at half time. Unfortunately we couldn’t convert our many chances into scores.
With 5 mins left Eve scored our only goal. Na Fianna pushed hard for a deserved levelling score
but were caught on the break for a late goal to Boden.
Many thanks to U14’s Laura Tarr and Aisling McDonald who played their first games for Under 15’s.
Next match vs Judes on Sunday 13th at 10.30am

22nd April - Scheduled match vs Nh Barrog postponed due to county
training - match to be rescheduled.
15th April - Match report Na Fianna 7-3 vs Kilmacud 1-0
Good performance against a weaken Kilmacud Crokes team.
First half scores from Lisa, Eve (1-1), Grainne, Sadbh and Sinead put the team
in a strong position.
Good performance from Ellen Langan who pucked out the balls with great accuracy and distance and set the attack in motion.
Wholesale changes at half time involved putting Eve in goal and Ellen playing in full forward line. Grace, Shauna, Maebh, and Ailsh all on for the second half.
Na Fianna continued to attack with scores from Grace and Orla (1-1) and a nice point from play from Shona which secured our final result of Na Fianna 7-3 to Crokes 1-0.
Notable performances from Orla Hogan at centre back, Sinead Henry Bezy at mid field, Sadbh Nolan in attack.
Next match – Sunday 22nd April vs Barrog (home)
1st April - Match report St. Judes 1-5 vs Na Fianna 1-0
Tough game away to St. Judes. Playing down the slope in the first half Na Fianna
got plenty of the ball into the forward line but the St. Judes backs go the upper hand
and kept us scoreless . Half time result 0-3 to 0-0.
Hard work in the second half playing up the slope, St. Judes got a goal but Na Fianna
kept battling away and created several chances, which were not coverted.
Ellen Langan was busy as the match drew to a conclusion and made some great saves.
As a last throw of the dice, Eve O’Brien was moved from center back into the
forward line and duly obliged by scoring a well-taken goal for our only score of the game.
Match finished 1-5 to 1-0.
Some notable performances from Roisin Gallagher and Sinead Henry Bezy in defence, Naoise and Sadbh in midfield and Lisa McKenna, Clare Taylor and Orla Corr in attack.
Disappointment at score line but the girls know that with extra effort at training sessions
and a full squad on the pitch we can put it up to St. Judes when we meet again.
25th March - match report Na Fianna 1- 3 vs Ballyboden 1-1
Good first outing against tough opposition. Na Fianna stayed with Ballyboden playing
up the hill during the first half. We were level at half time (point each), the point scored
from play by Lisa McKenna.
Na Fianna came out in the second half and took the game to Ballyboden, goal by Eve
O’Brien and some wonderful points from Naoise Webb put Na Fianna in the lead.
Some tenacious defending by Roisin Gallagher/Fiona McNally/Susan Clinton/
Sinead Henry Bezy/Orla Hogan/Ashling Murphy held Ballyboden scoreless until
injury time when Boden scored a goal however we were not to be denied and ran out
with a 1-3 to 1-1 scoreline.
Congratulations to two debutants Ailish Neville and Maebh Hanrahan.
Player of the match was Clare Taylor who played her best game in a Na Fianna jersey.
Well done girls, keep up training and practicing.
Next match against St. Judes (time and date yet to be confirmed)
