It's a Zoo out there!

U7 mentors are organising an end-of-term trip to the zoo on

Saturday, 8 December. We're expecting 50-plus boys and at

least 20 mentors/parents so the poor animals won't know what

hit them!

Note: slight change to arrangements

Saturday 8 December

Meet at Na Fianna: 10.30 (rather than 9.45)

Arrive in Dublin Zoo: 11.15

Lunch in Meerkat Restaurant: 13.30

Leave Zoo: 15.00

Arrive back in Na Fianna: 15.30

Note:

Cost is €10 per child to cover lunch and other expenses. If

you haven't already paid, please bring along the money on

Saturday.

We are hoping to have enough family cards to cover the cost

of entry for players and mentors but parents will have to

pay for themselves.

Parents are more than welcome to come but between family

card-holders and mentors we will have at least 20 adults -

which is enough to supervise the children - so unless you

really want to come, why not drop them off and go Christmas

shopping!

playing two matches each.

21 May update

Mini-leagues looming - get those forms in!

With the U7s Mini-leagues starting on Saturday week, 2 June, it’s important that

forms are returned as soon as possible. You can either give the completed forms

to me at training next Saturday or drop them into the club during the week.

Cost is €25 for paid-up members. If you don’t have a form, you can pick one up

at training.

Meanwhile… last Saturday’s training session saw another great turnout – a grand

total of 42 for second week running. New skill introduced this week: high catching.

Ably led by Richard Dunne and Martin Hardiman, the aim of the drill was to get

children used to leaping for the ball – such an important skill when they’re a bit

older and playing competitive matches.

The lads did great… and the kids weren’t so bad either!

Given the day that was in it – the grand opening of the new clubhouse, not to

mention the Dubs vs Derry match – sweets were handed out after the session.

And thanks to Paul McCarville for providing the goodies. If he does that again,

he’ll have to grow a white beard and put on five stone around the middle…

Next training: 9.20am, Saturday, 26 May

12 May update

42 turn out for Saturday training

An impressive total of 42 under 7s (out of a panel of 50)

turned out for football training on Saturday, the best

attendance for several weeks. Perhaps it’s the prospect

of the mini-leagues looming in just a few weeks that’s

getting the numbers up but, whatever the reason,

it’s great to see so many coming along week after week.

They included one Tiarnan McCabe, who because he

was on a sleepover with a pal, managed to miss the

entire football session, although he did make it in time

for the hurling afterwards. Well done Tiarnan, better

late than never! That’s dedication for you…

Despite the high numbers and the higher jinks between

the lads as we tried to assemble them on the goal

before splitting them into groups, the session started bang

on time.

Each group did several different drills – including kicking,

soloing, hand-passing and shooting – before we rounded

off the session with three seven-a-side games, which

saw the lads put all their hard-learned skills into practice.

All the skills are really coming on well, especially the catching

and hand-passing, which have come on leaps and

bounds in recent weeks.

Thanks to mentors Eamon O’Connell, Richard Dunne,

Mike Farrell, Martin Hardiman, Paul Nolan and Aldo Paolozzi

for helping out this week. And commiserations to Jim Ratcliffe

who would have been there except his van had been stolen and

burnt out in Darndale and he was going off to get a

replacement! However, his son, Jamie, kept the Ratcliffe flag

flying with a stellar performance in his match – good lad, Jamie,

keep up the good work!

See you all at training next Saturday and don’t forget

Dublin vs Derry at 6.30pm that very same day

8 May update

Another great training turnout

35-plus U7s turned out for training on Saturday despite the distractions of the bank

holiday.

The boys were taken through a number of drills including kicking (both feet),

shooting, hand-passing and slalom running/racing.

Soloing skills were also introduced for the first time, ably led by mentors

Mike Farrell and Paul Nolan. These will be an integral part of the Go Games

matches which begin next year and a lot of emphasis will therefore be placed

on the solo from now on, both in training and during

the Mini-leagues, which start on 2 June (see details below).

Thanks also to mentors Martin Hardiman, Matthew Kelly, Tom O’Connor

and Eamon O’Connell for helping out with coaching this week.

Next football training: 9.20am on Saturday 12 May.

Please try to be punctual, as a late start to the football has a knock-on

effect on the hurling afterwards. Football must finish at 10.40 at the latest.

If you have any questions about U7 football, contact Brian Skelly on 086 857-5829.

30 April 2007: U7 Football news update

Dates for 2007 Mini-leagues announced

Mini-leagues for the U7s start at 9.30am on Saturday 2 June.

Football & Hurling

Mini-league Finals/Family Day: Saturday 23 June

About the mini-leagues:

The Mini-leagues are the culmination of the juvenile coaching season.

They are a chance for children to show off their skills in a competitive

but fun environment. Children are divided into teams bearing the names

of various counties and over the course of four weekends compete against

each other in both football and hurling (these matches replace the

usual Saturday morning training).

Key points:

- The Mini-leagues start on Saturday of the Whit weekend (2 June) so

some of you may be on holiday. Don't worry if you miss the first week -

your child can join in the following week. You should make sure, however,

that he is registered so that he is ready to play on the 9th.

- Each child will be given a free tee-shirt, which they should wear

to every match

- Entry forms will be available at football/hurling practice on 12 May and

subsequent training sessions

- You are advised to register your child's name early as

places are limited

- As usual, there will be an entry fee, which will cover

the cost of running the leagues and providing tee-shirts etc. In return,

the kids are guaranteed to have a great time as well as a medal

and goody-bag on finals' day!

NEWS UPDATE… NEWS UPDATE… NEWS UPDATE…

U7 footballers shine in first outing

Plucky youngsters from Glasnevin impress from the start

14 April 2007 The Under 7 footballers played their first match – a friendly away to

Castleknock – and stole the show, winning four of the six games played. Rumour has it

that the other two were lost only because Na Fianna didn’t realise that the Go

Games scoring system was being used, awarding three points for a point and one for a

goal. The lads scored a bagful of goals but still lost. How unlucky is that?

Don’t worry fellas, you’ll know better next time and you’ll have the ball sailing over

the bar at every available opportunity.

Na Fianna managed to amass a squad of 35 keen young Jason Sherlocks for the

challenge match – not bad considering that it was the second weekend of the Easter

holidays and some players who would otherwise have been there were instead sunny

themselves on a beach in Costa del Kerry. (We know The Kingdom’s nice but is it

worth missing a match over? We don’t think so!)

Na Fianna fielded three teams and such was their heroic performance that they

definitely deserve a mention. So here’s the roll-call of honour…

Team 1 (manager: Matthew Kelly): Conor Donovan, Patrick Skelly, Rory Dunne, Niall

Hannon, Darragh Moroney, Micheal Murphy, Shane O’Leary, Luca Paolozzi,

Aaron Buckley, David Boylan

Team 2 (manager: Richard Dunne): Finian Gallagher, Mattieu Bourke, Christian

Gaspasi-McGuirk, Cillian Isdell, John McKenna, Philip Moreau, Simon McCarthy,

Cillian Hardiman, Jamie Ratcliffe, Darren Fanning, Fiachra Potts

Team 3 (manager: Paul Nolan): Brian O’Leary, Eoghan Cooney, Adam Carty,

Keith Doran, Jim Hickey, Hugh Caffrey, Zac Kelly, Niall McLoughlin, Mark Nolan,

Eamon Potter, Neal Donnelly, Mark Farrell, Aaron Stenson, John Foley

Our thanks to our kind hosts, Castleknock, who invited us to play against them,

especially Paul Warnock who organised it all. Thanks Paul, we'll have you back

at our place soon.

Under 7s – we salute you! Roll on the next match, details to follow…

(Thanks to Matthew Kelly for these great pics.)
